Scottish Power Platform User Group – Glasgow June 2025🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I recently spoke at the Scottish Power Platform User Group about how to make the most of Power Apps Components and Component Libraries. We covered how to build, deploy, and reuse components, discussed the pros and cons of different approaches, and wrapped up with a great Q&A. It was a fantastic evening with an engaged crowd, practical insights, and plenty of real-world examples. Big thanks to everyone who made it happen — looking forward to the next one!

Last night, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Scottish Power Platform User Group, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and insightful community sessions I’ve done in a while.

The focus of my session was on Power Apps Components and Component Libraries — something that many app makers know about but don’t always use to their full potential. We dug into how you can create reusable components, deploy them across multiple apps, and manage them effectively using component libraries.

I shared practical examples of how good design and thoughtful reuse can help you build apps that not only function well but also look polished and feel intuitive for end users. We covered the nuts and bolts:

  • How to build your own components from scratch

  • The process for deploying and reusing them — whether through simple import/export or via a managed component library

  • The pros and cons of each approach, and where they make sense depending on your environment and team size

One of the highlights for me was the lively Q&A at the end. The audience brought great questions and real-world scenarios, and we had some honest discussions about design trade-offs, performance, and what really works when you’re scaling apps across teams.

A special mention to Charlie Phipps-Bennett who managed to pull off a live demo in front of everyone — no recordings, no edits, just real app building on the spot. It’s always refreshing to see that level of authenticity at community events.

Events like this remind me why local user groups matter so much. They’re a chance to get into the details, share lessons learned, and connect with other makers who are tackling the same challenges.

Big thanks to our sponsors, Adapt 365 and DigPacks, for supporting the group, and huge appreciation for the organising team — Stuart Baxter, Rani Colquhoun, Josh Giles, and Charlie. Your time and energy behind the scenes make these sessions possible and genuinely worthwhile.

Scotland, you always make it special. Looking forward to the next one already.

Key Takeaways

  • Use Power Apps Components to build reusable, consistent UI elements.

  • Consider a Component Library when you need to maintain components at scale.

  • Balance simplicity and governance — there’s no one-size-fits-all.

  • Community Q&A is where the real learning happens.

If you’d like a copy of the slides or want to connect about how to get started with Components, feel free to reach out — always happy to keep the conversation going.
